Over the weekend, I went with a couple of the SPS interns to see the acclaimed Air and Space Museum. I had been there before as an 8th grader, but was eager to see it again having taken a number of astronomy courses during my time at Vassar.

I am really starting to enjoy life at the American Center of Physics (ACP). My position is directly affiliated with the American Institute of Physics (AIP), and we SPS interns have entered during a time of new and exciting change for AIP.

As my 2nd week here in D.C. comes to a close, things have become more routine. I wake up at 7:00 and meet the other interns working at ACP at 7:50 for our morning commute. We arrive at ACP about an hour later and then I stop by the Kurig machine for the first of many coffees. We all work, one intern on each floor of the building, until noon when we all take our lunch break together. We talk about our days as I inhale my lunch with enthusiasm. Afterwards, we go back to our work and then meet up again to catch the 5:00 shuttle to the metro station and begin the trek home. Once I get home I spend the rest of the day sitting on the couch watching TV until I go to bed. Then I wake up the next day and do it all again.

Our first weekend in the city was a blast. We all headed out to dinner Friday night for some ramen and shared stories from our first week and quite a few laughs. After exploring the Adams Morgan area for a few hours (which was pretty hoppin’ that night), we decided to head back to Woodley. The next day a few of us Metro’d to the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall. And let me tell you… I could not have been more excited. I felt so incredibly lost (both literally and mentally) in the excitement of exploring the wonders of space travel and our universe for hours on end. Eventually we headed out, stopped at the White House for a quick peak, and then returned to the apartment.

After just 4 days of getting used to my new life for the summer, my head is still spinning.
After a long flight in, I finally got to move my things to my new apartment on Monday and with my lovely roommates started to figure out the whole grocery shopping/cooking for ourselves deal after having eaten dining hall food for four months. With all that I’ve been up to over the past few days I’ve barely even gotten to explore Woodley Park, the neighborhood around our building, but I’m excited for the chance to do that over the weekend!

Woohoo! First week in D.C.! This week has been surreal. I met a Nobel Laureate, talked with members of the SPS leadership, and started working at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. After flying in to D.C. on Saturday, I met up with some interns and went out to see the city.

I am still in disbelief that I am here, four years ago I was not sure I would be able to continue my education after high school, now I am here in DC interning at the National Institute of Standards and Technology pursuing my passions.

The first few days in DC included some friendship-building and touristy fun in the city before work began. Having not been to DC in many years, it was a great experience to explore the city and see many of the historic sites. Our first full day lead us to the National Mall where the Rolling Thunder was hosting their Ride to the Wall event, an annual motorcycle rally to bring attention to individuals in the American military that are missing in action or prisoners of war. We explored many monuments around the mall – including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial – with more than 300,000 individuals in the city for the event.

In April, Drew and I had visited D.C. to attend AAAS’ CASE workshop. There we had learned about how science legislation comes to be and explored some parts of D.C. Needless to say, I left excited to come back and spend my summer working and exploring.
