SPS Leadership Scholarship
I am pursuing a degree in physics and computer science with a minor in mathematics at Bethel University. I became an SPS officer with the goal to start outreach activities at my school's chapter. I began by reaching out to local elementary schools, received a large number of replies, then organized dates to perform demonstrations at the schools to engage the students. I also recruited college students from our physics and engineering department to perform demonstrations. The activities were a great success and I hope to increase the number of outreach events we perform next semester and to create a framework that future SPS leaders can use to continue performing these events. It is important that my university's outreach activities continue beyond my time in college.
My SPS chapter also hosts weekly "cookie times" where students, professors, and other presenters showcase their research to students in our physics department, while enjoying cookies. We also hold a number of social events during the year which I help to organize such as an ice cream social, movie night, and pumpkin carving.
