Deryk McGarry

Biography

My name is Deryk McGarry and I am currently a rising senior at Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I am a Physics major and I am planning to add a mathematics minor this coming fall.

After transferring to SJU in 2023 I was elected to be the President of our SPS chapter for 2024. Prior to transferring I had not heard about SPS but I quickly got involved with SPS, organized projects and events and with the help and mentorship from students and faculty. My interest in physics stems from a fascination with electrical systems, renewable energy and quantum mechanics. This summer (2024), I am working in an ultra low-temperature lab at SJU, under the supervision of Dr. Roberto Ramos, dedicated to analyzing superconductive materials. We are also hosting a renewable energy focused summer camp for middle school girls to do hands-on projects that promote interest in physics. With the electronics and cryogenics skills I gain I hope to pursue a career developing renewable energy technology.
