American Physical Society (APS) x Snapchat: Modern Outreach Methods
Abstract:
As access to the Internet is becoming more ubiquitous, methods for obtaining information are rapidly shifting to mobile platforms. APS needed to explore new ways of outreach, especially to captivate a missing demographic. The launch of Physics Central’s Snapchat account is a step toward modern ways of reaching students in continuing attempts to spread the knowledge and excitement of physics with everyone.
I have just finished my sophomore year at Georgetown University, where I am pursuing an undergraduate degree in physics. Outside of the classroom, I take photos for the campus newspaper, The Hoya, and am involved in a student run consulting group, Hilltop Consultants. While I now call my dorm room in D.C. home, I am originally from Manila, Philippines. I went to high school in New Hampshire, where I was introduced to concepts of modern physics that led me to study physics in college.
I took a gap year after graduating from high school to go back home and work at various organizations in the Philippines. It is during this year that I grew interested in the intersection of education and marketing strategies. I am very excited to be working as the APS Outreach Intern, so I can share my love for physics with a broader range of people. I am also looking forward to meeting the other interns and mentors I will be working with this summer.
