Equipping SPS Chapters to do Science Outreach
The Society of Physics Students is a professional association explicitly designed for students, designed to help students transform themselves into contributing members of the professional community. SPS Science Outreach Catalyst Kits, or SOCKs, contain hands-on exploratory physics and science activities specifically designed for SPS chapters to use in outreach presentations to local elementary, middle and high school students.
Hannah and fellow SPS intern Shauna are creating and testing a set of core activities for this year's SOCK and writing instructions for lessons and demonstrations. They will also use the activities with the NIST Summer Institute for Middle School Science Teachers.
Final presentation
I am a rising senior at Lebanon Valley College studying physics and music with concentrations in oboe performance and theory. My inherent desire to understand our world is reflected in my active engagement with both physics and music. My interests within physics are varied but tend towards particle physics, astrophysics, and the philosophy of science. I am also passionate about interdisciplinary collaboration and aim to bring physics into every aspect of my life, as well as those around me. In my musical studies, I have spent the past year exploring mathematical applications to music analysis and presented my work at several undergraduate conferences. Additionally, I am a competition-winning oboist participating in a variety of ensembles, and organized LVC's first New Music Ensemble focusing on exploring music within the 20th century avant-garde and experimental styles.
In my free time, I enjoy exercising and doing anything outdoors, playing percussion, traveling, and watching Parks and Recreation. My dream is to be an educator, and I hope to pursue studying either music theory or particle physics at the graduate level while continuing to perform as often as possible, eventually moving out west to teach at the collegiate level and do a lot more stargazing. I'm so glad that my love of both the arts and sciences has led me to the Society of Physics Students and Washington, D.C., and I'm very excited to spend my summer exploring the creative and educational side of physics by designing the 2015 SOCK!
