SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor

Dr. Walter H. Johnson is Professor and Director of the Physics program as well as faculty advisor to SPS and Sigma Pi Sigma at the Department of Physics at Suffolk University in Boston. He was Phi Beta Kappa at Rice University as an undergraduate
and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at Harvard University where he earned his M.S and Ph.D in high energy particle Physics. After graduation he worked with the Harvard high energy physics group for several years at Fermi National Laboratory and began his career in the Physics Department at Suffolk University. He served as department chair for over two decades and founded the Electrical Engineering department, co-founded the Radiation Science and Medical Dosimetry programs, and started the Augmented and Virtual Reality group at Suffolk University. He was selected as the Massachusetts Professor of the Year in 2005 and won the Center for Teaching and Scholarly Excellence award for innovative teaching in 2018. His research continues with a group of SPS students in a neutron scattering project in a collaboration between the Physics Department at Suffolk University and Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital. This project has resulted in 3 SPS research awards and several selections as Outstanding Chapter by SPS in addition to publication of results in JURP and multiple presentations at American Physical Society meetings.
