Texas Lutheran University
2019
Herbert Levy Memorial Scholarship
My name is Roel Olvera II, I am from Rockport, Texas and I attend Texas Lutheran University. I am majoring in Applied Physics with a Computational focus and minoring in Mathematics. I plan to apply to master’s programs for engineering or PhD programs for astrophysics. I am currently a summer intern at the Maria Mitchell Observatory conducting astrophysics research. I hope this REU helps me decided what I want to do after my undergraduate studies. I never imagined that I would be a physics major, and started off thinking that I would study biology. After attending a major outreach event put on by the TLU SPS, I knew that I wanted to make the switch and have never looked back. Aside from physics, I am also on the men’s tennis team at my university. I spend a lot of time on the court with my team, in the library doing homework, and in the lab assisting my professor with freshmen level physics courses. I also enjoy going to concerts, taking trips with my friends, and going to the river.
