SPS Outstanding Service Award
"for playing a critical role in starting our chapter of the Society of Physics Students, helping to ensure and improve the departments’ sense of community, encouraging the academic and social development of new Students, and being a cornerstone of the department."
Derek has played a critical role in getting our chapter of the Society of Physics Students off the ground since its inception in the spring semester of 2018. Derek was a key participant in our department “listening sessions” on how to improve the departments’ sense of community that led to the formation of our chapter. Derek has been an active member, attending planning meetings, supporting our chapter’s role in the Saint Anselm Relay for Life, and helping me to give a workshop at PhysCon 2019. Like with many chapters, getting it off the ground has been a hard process that required the continued commitment of a few volunteers hoping to leave a legacy long after their graduation. Derek has one of those volunteers and a grounding factor during a large turnover in initial membership.
Derek’s service extends beyond the physics department to the college and broader community, as well. As a Transitions mentor, Derek has encouraged the academic and social development of new students to Saint A’s, particularly those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Through his work with the Intercultural Center and his involvement in the Multicultural Student Committee, Derek has centered inclusivity, something that is highly valued by our physics department.
