SPS Outstanding Chapter Advisor
Adelphi University
Matthew Wright earned his B.S. in Physics from Westminster College and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Wright currently works as an Assistant Professor at Adelphi University in the Department of Physics and serves as an Advisor for their SPS Chapter. He has earned multiple awards such as the Teaching Faculty Excellence Award from Adelphi in 2016 and the Professor of the Year award from Adelphi in 2015. He is a member of many academic and professional societies such as the American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Physical Society. Throughout Dr. Wright’s career, he has contributed to many journals and presentations.
To his students, Dr. Wright is seen as the “glue” of the SPS chapter, holding the team together. While being an available source of information, guidance, and opportunity, Dr. Wright allows students space to become leaders on their own. To raise student interest and involvement in STEM, he also promotes the chemistry club and the computer club around campus. In this way, he achieves his goal of making the SPS chapter more visible and involved on campus. As the advisor for the Adelphi SPS chapter, Dr. Wright is valued for leaving his door open for any questions or guidance his students need and his willingness to keep open communication within the chapter. Dr. Wright has been described as a “wonderful example” of what an SPS advisor should be, and this is shown from his relationship with his students to his involvement with the physics community.
