Chuck Stone joined the Department of Physics at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Fall 2007. His primary responsibilities involve teaching the large-enrollment, calculus-based physics courses for undergraduate engineering, computer science, and physical science majors using active-engagement teaching methods. As the Faculty Advisor to CSM’s Society of Physics Students (SPS), the organization has blossomed under his direction and strong student leadership as it selflessly participates in numerous on-campus and off-campus science education outreach programs. CSM’s SPS Chapter has earned the nationally coveted SPS Outstanding Chapter Award (in 2008, 2009, and 2010), hosted two regional SPS Zone 14 Meetings (Spring 2009 and Fall 2009), and won three Marsh White Outreach Awards to promote outreach efforts to local K-6 schools. Each fall, Chuck mentors new incoming freshmen in CSM’s Freshman Success Seminar course. In 2008, the American Association of Physics Teachers recognized him with its Distinguished Service Citation. Since 2009, he has been directing a 10-week Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program associated with CSM’s NSF-sponsored Renewable Energy Materials Research Science and Engineering Center, hosting 20 students in 2009 and 17 students in 2010.
