Award citation
Karen Williams has been an outstanding teacher of physics and mentor to young scientists. As a chapter advisor for the Society of Physics Students (SPS) and the National Physics Honor Society, Sigma Pi Sigma (ΣΠΣ), she has led small bands of students with limited resources to do great things. Her chapter has been consistently active and recognized as outstanding nationally. She has also been a leader of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) in her region. Dr. Williams was elected to serve as a Zone Councilor of SPS, ably representing the SPS Chapters of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. After only one year on the SPS National Council, she was elected President of SPS and quickly learned to lead the National Council with grace, vigor, and good cheer. Dr. Williams served tirelessly. Under her stewardship, the responsibilities of the presidency grew dramatically, as the SPS President came to represent the societies to the Annual Meeting of the Member Societies of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and at the annual meeting of AIP Corporate Associates, helping to bring together physicists from industry and academe. While president, she oversaw the most successful congress in the history of ΣΠΣ. Karen Williams accomplished all of this with energy, organization, enthusiasm, and good fellowship.
