Internship: SPS Outreach/ComPADRE with AAPT Physics Olympiad

My name is Jackie Michalek and I am a student at the University of California - Pennsylvania. I am currently a senior in Secondary Education/Physics and plan to student teach next school year. I tutor students from our community college in Intermediate Algebra and Calculus, and started a math tutoring program at a local high school to target the PSSA 'below proficiency' students. One thing about teaching that surprised me is how fast you grow attached to your students - they are wonderful!

My path to the SPS Internship is probably a little different than most. I earned a Computer/Science degree in the 1980's and worked for about 20 years in the field until Sept. 11th (my department lost its research funding). I took a few years off to spend time with my family, train horses and decide on my second career. I had always wanted to finish my Physics degree and I love to teach, so I am going for it! I have 2 sons, Chase (a sophmore at Edinboro University) and Tyler (a senior in High School). Tyler will be leaving for the Marine Corps on June 12th. They, and my spouse, Dave, are the most supportive bunch in the world - and can't wait to visit/tour DC!! (I guess you can tell by now that I am a little older than some of you. haha)

Like Erin, I love being outdoors. Rain, shine or snow...I'm there! I also love animals. I guess I'd better, as we have dogs, cats, birds and horses on our 5-acre homestead in Western PA. But, indoor sports are quite a passion of mine, too. I love bowling, racquetball, volleyball and lifting. But, there is nothing better than getting on my tractor and cutting-grass in the hot sunshine! Being chosen for this internship is very exciting. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you as we work and explore the Capitol. What an opportunity we all have!

take care,
