Internship: SPS Outreach
Introduction

I am a senior physics major at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. For the past two summers I have forsaken the cool summer weather of my hometown of Bothell, WA (just outside of Seattle), to pursue research in materials physics and MRI in hot and muggy Memphis.

This summer my interest in physics education research led me to the ACP in College Park where I will help create this year's SOCKs kit (and once more put up with summer heat). The kit will focus on different facets of geometry and mathematical thinking that are central to understanding physics.

While at Rhodes, I have tutored students of all ages in math and science. Tutoring Algebra most notably sparked my interest in physics education research, because it made me aware of large gaps in the mathematical understanding of the 8th graders that I worked with. It is my hope that the SOCKs kit that I help create this year will provide useful tools that SPS members can use to help students fill in the gaps in their math skills and more fully realize their potential as physics students.
